From Novice IT Specialist to System Administrator: The Evolution of David

Dive into the story of David, an ambitious IT consultant who found his calling. Discover how he evolved from a novice IT specialist to a confident System Administrator, driven by his passion for problem-solving and organizational strategies. A story full of growth, confidence, and personal support!

My onboarding at Bizztalent was over eight years ago, and it has really flown by. Before that, I had already gained some experience in various IT roles with other employers. My first job was rolling out telework installations, where I was responsible for installing docking stations and ensuring everything worked correctly for users at home. After that, I evolved into the role of Quality Checker for EIDs, where I gained experience in verifying and ensuring the quality of electronic identity documents.

Then Soheel from Bizztalent contacted me via my profile on the VDAB website. The first conversation was very promising. I immediately felt that Bizztalent had a personal approach and was genuinely looking for a project that matched not only my skills but also my ambitions and personality. They actively seek out a project that aligns with employees’ expectations.

My first project was on the service desk of a biopharmaceutical company. At the time, it was still a junior position but a very important step in my career. After a year, the service desk moved to Spain, which didn’t fit into my plans. Subsequently, I worked on various projects and had the opportunity to grow and evolve in increasingly challenging IT environments.”

Thus, I eventually climbed to the role of System Administrator, where I can fulfill my passion for exploring systems and contribute to the growth of IT. These steps have always been supported by the constant growth opportunities within BT, making it feel like a natural progression. I received the necessary training and guidance.

I am more of an on-the-job learner, so constantly working on projects and gaining experience has helped me the most. Whenever I indicated that I was reaching the end of my learning curve, they found a new project that challenged me. That enthusiasm and support have brought me to where I am now.”

The difference between a Support role and a System Administrator goes much deeper than just the approach to problems. As a System Administrator, you are not only responsible for resolving incidents when they occur, but also need to be proactive in anticipating problems and implementing solutions. This requires thorough knowledge of systems and technologies, as well as a keen understanding of the organization’s needs and its users.

As a System Administrator, you are not only responsible for resolving incidents when they occur, but also need to be proactive in anticipating problems and implementing solutions.

As a System Administrator, you must constantly monitor and manage systems, identify potential weaknesses, and implement preventive measures to ensure overall stability and efficiency. This demands not only a willingness to learn but also an in-depth understanding of IT infrastructures, networks, security protocols, and advanced troubleshooting techniques. You must be able to analyse, diagnose, and resolve complex issues. This requires a combination of technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a well-developed attention to detail.”

Additionally, the role of a System Administrator requires a high level of independence. You are responsible for the projects you work on and the associated outcomes.

It is a challenging role that can offer great satisfaction for those who enjoy problem-solving and organizational strategy. It demands dedication to professional development and growth, resulting in contributions to the success and growth of the organization.

The follow-up within Bizztalent is excellent. They regularly call to check in and take action if there are any issues. I feel truly supported, and the fact that they also listen to my side of the story gives me confidence.

In terms of training, Bizztalent offers both classroom training and individual learning opportunities. They listen to what you need and encourage you to take additional courses.

What sets Bizztalent apart from other IT consultancy companies is their personal approach. They truly believe in their staff and take the time to listen. I’ve seen other employers where an employee was immediately dismissed because the client had an issue with them, even if we, as colleagues, didn’t think it was fair. Decisions were made without listening to the employee. By listening to both sides, you can better understand the full story and make more informed decisions.

I’ve also noticed that some companies are very strict with their timing, policies, and their own demands, but not with the needs of the employee. When your timesheet at Bizztalent isn’t immediately in order, they will calmly call you first instead of immediately imposing sanctions. They take the time to resolve issues instead of punishing right away, and that makes a world of difference. It feels like a close-knit community where my growth as a professional is truly supported and appreciated.”

Bizztalent doesn’t care about race, appearance or religion. That's rather rare these days, and that's why I feel so good here.- Feedback from employee survey 2021
